Description
Artist: Robert Hawkins
Medium: Mesquite and tiger maple woods
Size: 30"L x 24"W x 17"H
This rare figuring in this slab was so beautiful, I told the owner of the sawmill, "SOLD" before he even told me the price. It has a cathedral grain orientation, with tiger and bird's eye characteristics... something I have never seen before or since in Mesquite. The main top split is stabilized by two hidden hand-cut bowties that were recessed into the bottom of the slab (see photo at end). I greatly prefer this traditional method vs. the current trend of pouring gallons of boat epoxy over everything.
The legs are tiger maple. I cut in a very contemporary repeated and mirror image design into the legs on each side giving the piece a rather art deco yet current look. The piece is finished only with teak oil and wax.
