Texas Mesquite Slabs of this size and quality are really quite rare and demand keeps growing. It took many days of meticulous effort with a dental tool, a sharp chisel and many, many sanding blocks to reveal just how unique this wood is. Some areas show evidence of insect and even fire damage; this tree lived quite a life before becoming a piece of functional art. I inlayed a small "butterfly" dovetail key on the underside for added strength. The asymmetric legs are African Bubinga from Cameroon that I then supported with Tiger Maple.
Mesquite is a great deal more dense than other US woods. This makes it excellent for furniture that will see heavy use like a coffee or dining table. It does, however take significantly more time and effort to cut, sand and polish properly. This is why I asked Troy Garza of local 209th Designs right here in Tomball to skillfully apply 5+ coats of clear lacquer to protect and enhance the top.
