Nancy Abney
Having grown up in Louisiana and Mississippi with a few years in West Virginia, Nancy developed an appreciation for rural landscapes, small towns, animals and the beaches of the Gulf. Her interest in art began at an early age when her grandmother gave her an easel and art box, both of which she still has and uses. She also remembers getting up very early every Saturday morning to watch Jon Gnagy Learn to Draw on TV. He was her first mentor.
In addition to her interest in art, Nancy was also intrigued with chemistry, biology and microscopes and after graduating with the appropriate degree, began a long career in medical technology in hospital labs, mostly in the DFW area. During those years, Nancy continued to paint and explore different creative paths, participating in charity craft shows, selling some art and glass projects. After retirement, Nancy returned to the Houston area to be closer to family. She joined a local art class in Spring taught by Ann Lohmann which meets weekly and gets inspiration from fellow artists and many online classes. She attempts to do something creative daily, working mostly in oils and pastel, to develop the skills to convert all those ideas into a physical piece of art that will, hopefully, illicit a positive response or emotion when viewed. She says it’s an ongoing challenge and never-ending learning process but how wonderful it is to be doing something you love. |
